A Simple Trick for Getting and Staying Motivated

Getting motivated to make significant changes in the way you eat is tough.

Staying motivated can be even tougher.

Some people will tell you to focus on how you’ll live longer, have more energy to play with your kids and enjoy the things in life you love, but I find that this rarely works.

It’s not that those things aren’t important to us – they are. It’s that they’re too concrete and practical and, as human beings, we’re moved by the emotional – not the practical.

Because we’re motivated more by feelings than ideas, I like to use this visualization exercise with my clients. You can try it too:

Find 10-20 min where you can be alone with your thoughts. Take a walk, take a bath or just sit in meditation.
Think about what your goal is with all this healthy eating stuff. Are you hoping to lose weight? Address some stubborn symptoms or health issues?

Next, instead of thinking about how that will look (i.e., you’ll be skinnier, the negative symptoms will go away), think about how that will FEEL.

I want you to really sink into this. If weight loss is your goal, how will it FEEL to be rid of the extra weight? If you want to be sexier, how will it FEEL to know that your spouse, your partner – or someone you want to be your partner – finds you incredibly sexy? How will it FEEL to know that people on the street are noticing you?

If you want to be more confident, how will it FEEL to walk into work or a meeting or a party, brimming with confidence over how you look and feel, and proud of the hard work you’ve done and the choices you’ve made to get there?

Really dig down deep into this exercise and FEEL those feelings. Spend some time in there and enjoy them, revel in them.

Do this every day.

Because coming back to those FEELINGS is what will motivate you to either start a new program or stick with healthier choices when everything else in you wants to sit on the couch and eat potato chips.
